Despite the international spread of these narratives, they contain many of the social, cultural, historical and natural features of the regions where the people who told the tales lived. All this gives Slovenian fairy tales a distinctive character, which distinguishes them from fairy tales of other nations, even though they belong to the same folktale types. The narrative style of folktales is often simple and concise, as it is composed of the many life experiences and emotions of ordinary people. In the past, telling stories – including fairy tales – was intended above all for adults, as the stories often had very old roots and bore various messages. For this reason, fairy tales, which are the central genre of this book, despite being considered children's stories today, often contain elements that evoke fear or are even cruel, as can be seen in many of the stories published in this book, which preserves the authentic image without the embellishments we are accustomed to in fairy tale collections for children.
The second volume of the type index of Slovenian folk tales of magic, arranged according to the international ATU classification system (Aarne, Thompson, Uther), gathers Slovenian fairy tales classified as folktale types from ATU 500 to ATU 749; first volume contains types ATU 300 to ATU 499.
