Author: Lidija Tavčar
Year: 2025

Monograph ('Between Kobarid and Paris') explores the life and work of Venceslav Smrekar (1875–1944), a civil engineer and artist, through the lens of microhistory. This methodological approach highlights individual experiences and everyday life to reveal broader historical, social, and cultural processes. Smrekar’s path led from Kamen ob Soči through Gorizia and Ljubljana to Belgrade and France, reflecting pivotal historical events—from World War I to the migrations of Slovenian intellectuals and artists. Although he did not achieve recognition as a painter within the major artistic canon, his work in drawing, illustration, and cartography demonstrates technical precision, creative perseverance, and a photographic approach.

The monograph presents Smrekar as an individual who shaped the cultural and technical space of his time while also shedding light on social structures, artistic networks, and the migrations of Slovenian creators. The significance of the work goes beyond art history, emphasizing the value of the microhistorical approach for recognizing and documenting marginal yet important historical lives.
