Authors: Matjaž Bizjak, Neva Makuc, Miha Seručnik, Jurij Šilc
Year: 2025

The second volume in the Slovenian Historical Topography series is dedicated to the territory of the Slovenian Littoral (Primorska). It is based on previously unpublished material by Milko Kos, which was later supplemented after his death by Pavle Blaznik and Janez Šumrada. The revised and expanded work includes 1,469 toponyms (villages, hamlets, market towns, towns, castles, manors, field and water names, etc.) along with historical variants of their names as recorded in sources up to the year 1500 (charters, urbaria, feudal records, account books, notarial and cartulary books, etc.).

The entries are arranged alphabetically, and each historical name form is accompanied by the date, the source in which it appears, the location of the source (archive, library, etc.), and, where applicable, the publication in which the source has appeared (published collections). The entire corpus comprises more than 11,685 historical variants of geographical names from the Slovenian Littoral (paleonyms). The work is based on 85 recorded charter collections and more than 300 codices and documents from Slovenian, Austrian, Italian, Croatian, and German archives and libraries.

The handbook, together with an accompanying web application linked to a map will undoubtedly be of interest to experts from various academic disciplines (historians, geographers, archaeologists, ethnologists, linguists, etc.) as well as amateur historians and local history enthusiasts.
