Rihemberk Castle is one of the most important and striking examples of castle architecture in northern Primorska and the wider region. Following the first volume (2025), we now have the second volume, which, among other things, provides a comprehensive account of the castle’s first known medieval owners, the Lords of Rihemberk (Reifenberg), and the Lanthieri noble family (after 1910, the Levetzow-Lantieri family), who, as the castle’s owners in Early modern period and Modern era until 1947, significantly influenced not only the castle’s architectural development and furnishings but also life in Branik and the wider Goriška region. The book also provides a detailed account of the castle’s last steward, Johann Kollman, and major historical events associated with the castle, such as the peasant uprising of 1713 and World War I. The book also contains a comprehensive presentation of the castle’s architectural history as well as its artistic and cultural life, particularly within the circle of the art patron and collector Count Livius Lanthieri. The collection of chapters concludes with a presentation of the efforts of the Municipality of Nova Gorica to renovate and revitalize the castle. The in-depth articles are further enriched by high-quality visual material, much of which comes from foreign and private archives.
