The new book by Aleksander Bassin (‘The Observer of Thoughts. The Artist’s Work and Its Interpreter’) – one of Slovenia’s leading art critics, curators, and publicists, and long-time director of the Ljubljana City Art Gallery – brings a selection of the author’s writings from as far as the 1950s to the very present day. In addition to previously published texts, the volume includes his previously unpublished contributions and lectures delivered both in Slovenia and abroad.
“A glance at the titles of the articles published by Aleksander Bassin between 1955 and 2025 reveals a wide array of artistic encounters – exhibitions, studio visits, time spent with artists while preparing exhibitions or personal friendships – as well as meetings with curators and organizers, however, much else is revealed. The texts paint a panorama of developments that emerged among artists, audiences, and professionals; they are a document of a social sensibility that has grown alongside the dynamic changes of past decades. The subjects – or the protagonists – of the described events unfold in a continuous arc, like echoes of the prevailing mood, particularly in Slovenian surroundings. The resonances and comparisons with interests and distinctive aspects of the visual arts beyond today’s national borders offer a reflection on the broader dimensions of artistic creation.” (Dr. Nataša Golob)
