A group of modernist architects, led by Le Corbusier, viewed architecture ideologically — as an economic and political tool for constructing buildings and designing settlements that would help improve the world after the devastation of the First World War. Guided by these principles, architect Edvard Ravnikar designed plans for an entirely new settlement in the Solkan fields immediately after the Second World War. In this way, Nova Gorica belongs to the group of so-called "new towns," whose development can be traced throughout the 20th century in various European countries and around the world. What makes Nova Gorica unique is not only its politically motivated origin but also its spatial integration into the existing urban environment. It forms a so-called conurbation with neighboring settlements. Today, we have the distinct yet interconnected towns of Gorizia and Nova Gorica — each with its own unique political, economic, and cultural identity — yet together they form a unified whole in the urban landscape.
