A substantial body of postwar art created for institutional environments remains hidden in plain sight: in schools, hospitals, municipal offices, factories, hotels, shops, and other spaces of everyday life. Some works remain intact, others survive in altered interiors or as partial material remains, and still others are known only through scattered archival records, photographs, and uncertain memories. Many have been covered, relocated, destroyed or forgotten, even though they formed an important part of postwar public space and visual culture.
This volume contributes to the transnational study of art commissioned for public institutions, a field that remains unevenly researched across national contexts. The chapters show how institutions used art to shape their environments and how later changes in use or ownership affected the works’ meanings and prospects for preservation.
